LEAGUE FORMAT

  • LF1.00 INDIVIDUAL FORMAT:
    • LF1.01 Overview: Despite Kan Jam being a team game our league ranks players individually and crowns an individual champion each season. We do this to accommodate the busy schedule of dads and also to create a social atmosphere where players play as teammates with as many league members as possible.
    • LF1.02 Regular Season Team Selection: Prior to the start of play each player in attendance is paired with another player in attendance to make a team for that gameday.
      • (a) Paired players play as a team for all games during that gameday.
      • (b) Teams can not be altered once gameplay begins
      • (c) Players can only be paired together once per regular season (this rule does not apply to the playoffs).
      • (d) Weeks 1 through 11 – Random selection
        • (1) Teams are selected randomly using the “App” (found here) from the pool of players in attendance at the specified deadline for each gameday.
        • (2) In the event the app is not functioning drawing names or numbers from a hat will be used instead.
        • (3) In the event the random selection results in a team of players who have previously played together as a team in the same regular season then the randomizer will be re run until a roster of unique teams is found.
        • (4) Odd Players: When there are an odd number of players in attendance one player must be selected to play on 2 teams.
          • (a) Teams 1 and 2: In the event of an odd player team numbers 1 and 2 will be the teams that include the odd player. Teams 1 and 2 CAN NOT play each other during a gameday.
          • (b) Double player obligation: Any member of the league can only be the double player once during a regular season.
          • (c) Double player selection:
            • For the first 4 gamedays of the regular season the double player will be selected randomly by all players in attendance by drawing from a hat.
            • For the remainder of the season the double player will be the player in attendance who has the lowest regular season attendance up to that point. If there are multiple players with the same low attendance then the selection will be made by drawing from a hat filled with their names.
          • (d) Double Player Partner Obligation: Players should only be required to be paired with the double player once per season. Prior to team selection the players who have previously been paired with the double player will be identified and if the random selection pairs them with the double player again we will reshuffle.
            • Exception: Due to the variations in attendance there is a very rare possibility that toward the end of the season the double player has already played with every other player in attendance other than one who has been a double player partner in the past. In this case that player will be the double player partner again.
      • (e) Final Week of the Regular Season (Week 12 as scheduled) – Contenders vs Spoilers
        • (a) Player pool identification: Attending Players will be divided into 2 player pools: Contenders and Spoilers:
          • Contenders must meet the following requirements:
            • Player must be playoff eligible for the season (On pace to attend 50% + 1 of the regular season games and have fulfilled their hosting/assisting/comitte/gamedayrunner obligation for the season.
            • Player must be ranked in the top 12 of the season rankings OR have a .500 or better winning percentage for the season
          • Spoilers are defined as any player participating in week 12 that is not a contender
        • (b) Odd number of players in the Contender Pool: In the event of an odd number of players in the contender pool the next highest ranked Spoiler will be designated a Contender.
        • (c) Contender Possible Partner Identification: Teams will be assembled in such a way that all Contenders will be paired together and Spoilers will be paired together.
          • Contender Teams will be assembled from the pool of Contenders in a modified random draw. The list of possible partners for each player is created by:
            • eliminating any other contender they have already been paired with AND
            • eliminating any other contender who is currently 1 position ahead and 1 position behind the player in the current league standings*  AND
            • preventing any\all players that are vying for the last (#10) playoff spot to be paired together. *

              *
We do this to avoid a pairing in which a player is unable to “jump” the player ahead of them because they are paired together.
        • (d) Contender Team Selection –  Once the partner candidates are decided we will start with the highest (1-10) ranked player with the lowest number of possible partners and do a random selection (hat or similar) from that player’s pool of possible teammates.  We will then move to the next highest ranked player with the lowest number of possible partners until we have a valid team configuration.  In the event that the random draw leads us to an invalid team config (the only players left have already played with each other) the contender selection process will start over until it results in a valid configuration.
        • (e) Spoiler teams will be assembled by random draw from a hat (or similar) from the pool of spoiler players. In the event of an odd number of players are in attendance the double player will be selected from the Spoiler pool with the player with the lowest attendance on the year being the candidate keeping with the rule that someone can not be DP more than once a season etc.
        • (f) Schedule: Once we have the team pairings for both the Contender and Spoilers they will be loaded into the app along with the first cycle of games.
        • (g) Late Night Games: After the Round Robin schedule has been completed and weather and daylight permit we will follow the late night schedule as outlined in LF3.01(c).
        • (h) Tie Breaker: After the full slate of games is completed if there is a tie in the standings and sunlight and weather allow a single game head to head game will be played between the tied players.  Tied players will flip a disc.  Winner gets to choose between choice of partner or Hammer. In the event there is a tie with playoff implications in which a player is not present on week 12 the tie breaker game will be pushed to before the Play In Round or Championship Event depending on player availability and need.
  • LF2.00 SPIRIT OF THE GAME
    • LF2.01  The Spirit of the Game is a set of expectations for the WKJL that is the responsibility of the players to maintain. WKJL promotes an atmosphere of camaraderie and sportsmanship, while encouraging competitive, fair, and fun play.
    • LF2.02  These expectations also apply to staff members and spectators. While spectators may not know all the detailed rules of the game, they are still expected to act with respect and integrity toward all players, staff, and other spectators. Poor behavior will not be tolerated, and spectators may be asked to leave by a WKJL official.
    • LF2.03  All players are expected to know the rules of Kan Jam and WKJL and adhere to those rules in order to maintain fairness and respect the integrity of the game.
    • LF2.04  Players shall act as referees in their own games. It is the expectation of the players to administer the rules when they feel a judgement call is needed or when a violation has occurred.
    • LF2.05  If a violation is made during a game, it is up to the players involved in that game to call out that violation. It is not the responsibility of spectators, staff, or other teams watching the game to call out rule infractions.
    • LF2.06  Players shall not abuse the ability to make their own calls to give themselves an advantage in a game. Players shall be honest, respectful, and willing to admit if a violation has been committed or a judgment call does not go their way.
    • LF2.07  All players should come together to discuss disputes and should not take any decisions personally. Players should be able to admit and accept when they are wrong. See Disputes (GP13.00) section for further clarification.
    • LF2.08  All players are ambassadors for WKJL and should strive to uphold the Spirit of the Game. Veteran players should be willing to mentor and help novice players to explain the rules and violations in a respectful manner, not just tell players they are wrong.
    • LF2.09  All players should be willing to respectfully talk to opposing players. The only way for players to improve their gameplay is to have open and honest conversations about what may have gone wrong. Players should be willing to accept this constructive criticism without taking it personally.
    • LF2.10  Examples of actions that display the Spirit of the Game:
      • (a) Players introducing themselves prior to the start of a game
      • (b) Congratulating an opposing player for a good deflection or throw
      • (c) Bumping fists with opposing players at the conclusion of a game or series
      • (d) Accepting when a violation is called out
      • (e) Players calling themselves out if they know they’ve committed a violation
      • (f) Players not taking calls against their team personally
      • (g) Staying calm during a dispute
      • (h) Respectfully coming to a mutual agreement
      • (i) Clearly stating the score after each round
    • LF2.11  Examples of actions that do not follow the Spirit of the Game:
      • (a) Arguing anytime a violation is called out
      • (b) Refusing to accept a resolution to a dispute
      • (c) Purposely lying about an action in order to benefit
      • (d) Celebrating when a team misses a play
      • (e) Purposely distracting a player while they are trying to make a throw or deflection
      • (f) Standing too close to an opposing player while they are attempting to throw or deflect the disc
      • (g) Swearing/cursing at the opposing players
      • (h) Elevating disagreements with officials or other players from respectful to verbally abusive
  • LF3.00 REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULING
    • LF3.01 The regular season gamedays are scheduled with the following goals:
      • (a) Round Robin approach: Every team in attendance plays every other team in attendance at least once.
      • (b) 10 Game Goal: Since our league randomly selects teammates our goal is to play the same number of games each week to maintain an even distribution of games with each partner.
        • (1) Every team plays no more than 10 games each night unless more games are required to ensure that every team has played every other team at least once.
        • (2) If weather and sunlight permit every team will play 10 games each night. If the round robin schedule does not schedule 10 games per team “late night” games will be added to the schedule to get the total games for each team to 10.
      • (c) Late Night Schedule:
        • (1) Added games: The late night schedule will be added to the schedule after the round robin schedule is complete if the teams have not met the 10 game per gameday goal and if weather and sunlight allow.
        • (2) Gameday Seeding: For the purposes of the Late Night games teams will be seeded based on the gameday rankings at the end of the round robin for that gameday.
          • Tie Breakers:
            • 2 way tie: Head to Head record for the gameday.
            • 3+ way tie: Record among the tied teams then total point differential among the tied teams. If a tie still remains numbers will be drawn from a “hat”.
          • Schedules (The numbers below denote Team Ranking at the end of the Round Robin schedule. These numbers are NOT the Team number for the night. For example if Team # 6 is the first place team at the end of the round robin round that team will be represented by the # 1 in the schedules below)
            • 13 – 14 players:
              • 1 vs 2

              • 7 vs 8
              • 9 vs 10
          • Adjustments for Odd Number of players: Since a single player can not play on teams against himself Team #1 and Team #2 (Team number not seed) will not play each other. If the late night schedule above results in a game in which Team #1 and Team # 2 play each other minor adjustments will be made to the Late Night Schedule above.
  • LF4.00 WEATHER, INJURIES, ATTENDANCE, ETC.
    • LF4.01 Weather
      • (a) Prior to Play: In the event of inclement weather or forecast that endangers league players or renders gameplay results not indicative of skill level prior to the gameday beginning the league will postpone, reschedule or cancel a gameday.
      • (a) During play: In the event of inclement weather that endangers league players or renders gameplay results not indicative of skill level once gameplay has started for the gameday the league will temporarily suspend gameplay.
        • (1) If weather has not improved after a temporary suspension the league may take the following actions:
          • If each team has completed 7 or more games the gameday will be counted as an official game and records will be counted.
          • If any team has not completed at least 7 games the gameday will be rescheduled where the games played will not count toward the season rankings. Because the same attendance can not be guaranteed on the new date a new team selection will occur. If the gameday can not be rescheduled the gameday will be canceled and the games played will NOT count toward the season rankings.
    • LF4.02 Attendance
      • (a) 12 Player minimum: a minimum of 12 league members must be in attendance and able to play in order for a gameday to start. In the event 12 players are not in attendance the gameday will be canceled.
    • LF4.03 Injury
      • (a) In the event a player or players become injured, ill or unable to continue play once gameplay has begun:
        • (1) Regular Season: If this situation arises during the regular season that player and their assigned teammate will forfeit the rest of their games for that gameday.
        • (2) Playoffs
          • Play In and General Round: If this situation arises during the Play In or General Round of the Playoffs the injured player will be replaced by the next lowest seeded player in attendance (most likely # 11 or #12 from the regular season rankings). This replacement players will acquire the injured players record and be allowed to continue to advance in the playoffs.
          • Championship Round:
            • Player: if this situation arises during the Championship Round of the playoffs and the injured player is the playoff contestant then the player forfeits the rest of their games.
            • Partner: If this situation arises during the Championship Round of the playoffs and the injured player is the selected partner then the playoff contestant may select another league player in attendance to continue play with. (The previously selected partners of the other playoff contestants excluded.)
